1. Greece, a beautiful country that bustles with commerce and culture. It is also a country full of faith. Greek Orthodox faith which is part of the great Western branch of Christianity. But it was not always this way. In this same territory, there was another world of which only fascinating fragments remain. Fragments that when joined, they tell extraordinary stories of a world ruled by powerful gods and heroes. A world in which the actions of its inhabitants were governed by their religious beliefs. Considered one of the cradles of Western civilization. This was the world of the ancient Greeks. ii. Ethos/Credibility Statement
1. Because it is not possible to describe the religion of ancient Greece from direct observation, it was necessary to rely on an important set of literary sources including the works of Homer and Hesiod which helped to understand the culture and life of the ancient Greeks. Besides gods, there was another kind of figure that Greeks worshiped – the heroes. A hero was a figure less powerful than a god, but sometimes, almost as important in history as the ancient Greek gods. Some of them were half god and half human because they were the result of a romantic relationship between a god and a human. Achilles, Heracles, and Perseus were some of the most recognized heroes of the Greek history. However, to be a hero, it was not a requirement to be a semi-god. A man could be worshiped in his tomb because the fame he gained during his life or because he had an unusual death. These special circumstances provided the man some kind of power over the living. According to Homer, “one reason for worshipping heroes must surly have been the feeling that they had been beings stronger and altogether more splendid than the men of today” (Parker
