As cities in America grow into suburban, American parents in the present go to work without bringing their child with them. Thus, leaving them at school or childcare centre, where children communicate more with the telephone and less interaction with neighbours. As a result, American children get isolated with few friends, with less interaction with the society (Sunarti, 2012). The phenomena happen in Indonesia as well, where the role of mothers is represented by babysitters (for middle to upper-class families) nowadays. Sometimes, those babysitters do not teach the children right (parent’s culture) morals. Instead, they want those children to be inactive for each whole day so that they do not have much to do. According to the functionalist theory, the declining of birth rate in one country indicates family decline where fewer spouse do “reproduction” in one year (Carl, et al., 2012). In Indonesia, there is significance decrease of birth rate. Indonesia’s birth rate was approximately 22 births out of 1000 population, while not many women prefers career over marriage yet. But in 2010, the birth rate of Indonesia dropped to approximately 18 births out of 1000 population, because more and more women prefer career than family (CIA World Factbook, 2011). Conflict theory has a different view on family decline; they indicate family decline when there is an increase in average restaurant’s revenue. When restaurant revenue increases, this means that more wives do not cook for family’s dinner. Symbolic interactionism has a different view; that is, how families treat each other.
