An extravert is described as one who is “warmly interested in people”, with “great people skills” (Personality Page, 2015), which can help in all three categories of managerial roles: interpersonal, informational and decisional (Stretch, 2009). At the same time, an extroverted personality can be seen as a threat by colleagues at work. For example, coworkers may perceive an attempt to demonstrate leadership as a form of trying to get an edge on others. Even though this may not be true, perception tends to win in these situations. According to Otto Kroeger, Janet M. Thuesen, and Hile Rutledge in the book Type Talk at Work, although in the American society extraverts outnumber introverts three to one, an introverted personality does not always mean more success (2002, p. 572). For example, one of my Sailors wanted to take leave outside the normal leave period that had been authorized by the command. Instead of automatically denying his leave request, I decided to ask the question of why he wanted to take leave at that specific time, especially since he very well knows what the latest leave policy and date range is. After asking this question, I found out that hunting season in his home of Idaho begins in October, and being that he comes from divorced parents, spending quality time with his dad is very important to him. Perceiver
Receiving only 3 percent result of a perceiver in my personality type, tells me that I am just a little more of a perceiver than a judger. A person that is described as a perceiver is more likely to take their time awaiting more data before making a decision or reaching a conclusion; whereas a judger will make a decision before obtaining all the data. Looking back at work, I try to always obtain all the data before making a decision, however there are times when time is critical and a decision needs to be made. Good
