At first, Marie uses her miscarriages as a justification to why she kept Rose, the dead baby. “The ones my body could never hold. The ones that somehow got suffocated inside me…” (Danticat 92). Soon enough, Marie ends the story offering her body to Dominican man when she is caught burying Rose. “ I should have asked his name before I offered him my body” (Danticat 100). The character’s illusions of having a family , that she took a dead baby, captivates the reader creating an overall mood of helplessness. These illusions of having a family and what she is willing to do to get one makes the readers want to know what is it that she will do next.
In the middle of book, the short story, “ Night Women” the women, the main character, captivates the reader’s attention with her work choice. In the beginning, she expresses that she depends on the money she get from her suitors, not just her but her son. “ Yet if I am to live, I must depend on it” (Danticat 83). However , in the story she actually “works” with her son asleep in the same room. “One of my suitors gave it to him to plug his ears so he can stay asleep while Mommy works” (Danticat 85).
