When I first arrive at the Italian Renaissance I rush over in a frenzy to see the beautiful Gates of Paradise by the very talented Lorenzo Ghiberti. After taking a moment to take in the details of the Gates of Paradise, I searched for Ghiberti until I found him. When I found Ghiberti, I ask him about the history of his masterpiece. From Ghiberti I learn that he entered his work in a competition to redesign the eight-sided Baptistery and surprisingly won. Also, I learned that the doors where made of bronze that had been casted from wax molds he had carved. His very detailed and precise work portrays the story of Abraham’s sacrifice of his son Isaac. (Bishop, 7th edition, 196) Afterwards, I went to see Brunelleschi’s Dome at the Florence Cathedral. The first sculpture I seen was David by Donatello. Donatello was present at the time I was viewing his sculpture, so I got to learn a little history about his work. Donatello said his work was made of bronze and was the only life-size nude sculpture since classical times. (Bishop, 7th edition, 205) I also got to visit other sculptures made od marble like Pieta, Moses, and David done by Michelangelo. Michelangelo’s sculpture Pieta was the Virgin of Mary mourning the loss of Jesus. All of the sculptures I seen were done in great detail and in a life-size or larger than life-size
