The American publishing rights were then sold to the publishing house, Scholastic (Oxoby 85). Scholastic executives had doubts about the title having the word Philosopher. “It was felt that ‘Philosopher’ was not a word familiar to young Americans” reported Sean Smith in his book, J.K. Rowling: A Biography (Steffens 81). It was suggested that the name ‘Philosopher’ should be replaced with ‘Sorcerer’ when published in the United States. Rowling agreed to the change because she felt it would benefit the younger readers (Steffens 81).
