Charles II was a king of England, Scotland, and Ireland whose restoration to the throne in 1660, marked the end of republican rule in England. He was asked by Parliament to rule England after the death of Oliver Cromwell. Charles was known for his cavorting lifestyle and feuds with Parliament.
Early Life
Charles was born May 29, 1630. He is the second son of Charles I and Henrietta Marie of France. In 1642, civil war broke out between Parliament and Charles I over his claim of divine right of rule.Parliament ended victorious. Charles II spent most of his teenage years fighting Parliament’s forces until his father’s execution.Parliament ended victorious. Charles I was executed in 1649 and a young Charles II fled to France. Charles married to Catherine of Braganza but had no children with her. He did however have many children with different women. During the 11-year period where normal government was suspended Charles II was forbidden from being crowned king. People in Scotland offered him a the throne. He was inexperienced. He led a force into England but was quickly defeated at the Battle of Worcester. He fled the continent and spent almost a decade in exile. Monarchy was restored, the eleven years of Commonwealth were ignored. Charles was an good but lazy ruler considering England’s situation at the time of his rule he was very successful. He often chose to wait until last minute to make a decision. He was intelligent and a supporter of scientific research. "Charles II was always very merry and was therefore not so much a king as a Monarch. During the civil war, he had rendered valuable assistance to his father's side by hiding in all the oak-trees he could find. He was thus very romantic and popular and was able after the death of Cromwell to descend to the throne." Charles died February 6, 1685, converting to Catholicism on his death
