To begin focus on the first piece of literature, The Gettysburg Address, a speech by Abraham Lincoln. The speech he delivered was merely 2 minutes long, but the words he spoke still echo through the world to this day. This speech is written in the vernacular of the time, very similar to old english. Lincoln uses an ample amount of literary and rhetorical techniques such as: inverted syntax, repetition, allusion, simile, triad, and metaphors. Some would consider The Yellow Wallpaper a protest novel due to the symbolism and the topic of the novel. As a book about isolation therapy, it was a very impactful piece of literature in history. This novel showed the true impact social roles had on women in history, and revealed the struggles women go through in isolation therapy, proving that it is what drives women to sanity not away from it. The Yellow Wallpaper had an exemplary amount of symbolism and required inferences. Much of what happens in this novel seems distorted or is unexplained; however, it still continues to use symbolism and other literary techniques similar to The Gettysburg Address. This novel is one of the most renowned pieces of protest literature, and consequently led to the stopping of isolation therapy as a means of treating
