This article states that loneliness is one of the biggest issues for older adults. Loneliness can be tie to more health care issues and utilization of the health care facilities. They go on to state that a lot of elderly patients visit their doctors more often for social support rather than just medical treatment. These elderly adults have been subject to physical, financial, and mental abuse along with being neglected. There was a study done which included 135 older adults, male and female, over the age of 65 that lived by themselves or with others. In this study the researchers used the method of a questionnaire to get the results. The results indicated the older adults over the age of 75 were more physically abused and those younger than 75 were financially abused, but overall, they all felt they were emotionally abused or neglected. After these results were concluded they were able to come up with suggestions to fix this issue concerning older adults. A major weakness by using a questionnaire for this study could be that another family member could have filled out this questionnaire or the person filling it out could have been scared to state their true feelings. The authors state that depression for older adults’ results from independence, mobility, health problems, loneliness, isolation, medications, fears, and much more. They go on to say that this is frequently seen with older adults because this is what is expected for their age, which eventually causes worse scenarios of the elderly because it goes untreated. There are many efforts that are stated that can be done such as, psychologists can provide direct help for the elderly to improve the psychological wellbeing of older adults.
