The chapter starts with military airplanes battling above the island creating explosions and flashes, as the boys sleep below. None of the boys are awake to see the hostility in the sky because the twins, Sam and Eric, who were suppose to be watching the fire, had fallen asleep. A parachute, holding a man, came floating down onto the island to the top of the mountain. William Golding describes this as a sign that came down from “the world of grownups”. The wind shifts the man on the parachute’s head back and forth and makes the parachute flail around in tangles. When the twins wake up they return to the fire and begin to build the flame back up. After the twins recite their story, Jack wants to hurry out to kill the beast but Piggy, unsure about the hunt, suggests that they restrict their living area to just the platform. During the assembly there is a conflict about the conch between Piggy and Jack which is quickly resolved by Ralph, displaying the control Ralph still has over Jack.
