Louise Nevelson’s art piece contains many similar characteristics from lines, shapes to texture. One of Louise Nevelson’s greatest art work the Sky Cathedral (1958) demonstrate great use of the principles and elements of design. For instance the interior design of the Sky Cathedral contains many elements of art. The sculpture is painted in black, and it is created by using many different geometric shapes for example rectangles, squares and triangles as well as the use of different types of lines such as horizontal, vertical and wavy lines. Looking at this art work directly gives an illusion as if the object is 2d as well as offering a smooth texture due to the paint applied on the objects and evenly distributed spacing between the objects.The emphasis in artwork is located in the left side of the sculpture by using more objects compared to the right side of the sculpture. Firstly, I choose a cubic design since many of Louise Nevelson’s works are related to Hans Hoffman and Pablo Picasso’s cubism art works. Secondly, I choose to Paint my sculpture black since Louise Nevelson states that “…black creates harmony and doesn’t intrude on the emotions.” so not only my final piece is related to Louise Nevelson, but also creates harmony. Thirdly, Louise Nevelson’s arts works are mostly related to her past experience, so instead of including her experiences in my art work, I chose to mine instead, since I understand myself better than I would understand her.
