The progressive period, or progressive era, begun in 1890 but it was not until 1901 when President Theodore Roosevelt was elected president that the progressive era and its movements gained nationwide importance. Progressive is a term used to describe a series of responses to social and economic related issues. The progressive era also refers to the series of movements and reforms that occurred all over the United Stated within the first two decades of the twentieth century. The progressive era was a period of political movements, social activism, and reforms in America that flourished in the 1890s and ended in the 1920s. Roosevelt was attributed a lot of the improvements and the movements that occurred during the period of progressive, such as the development and growth of America. For instance, Roosevelt implemented the open “door policy” which based its point on trading with every country, he also sent troops to built-up the Panama Canal. Roosevelt made legislation that gave the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) new powers to set railroad rates, laying the foundation for the modern administrative state. Later he cast himself as steward of the nation’s natural resources and presided over the birth of the conservation movement. He was convinced that a strong defense was the best guarantee of peace, therefore; he built up the Navy and sent it around the world. Overall, the progressive era was a period from 1890-1920 that brought along a series of political movements and social activism which as a result brought out the approval of women’s right to vote, improvements in the education system, and the prohibition of alcohol and prostitution.
