Historical Context: Manifest Destiny
Conflict and compromise is something that has been happening in our world for generations. One example in history is the dream of Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny was the belief that the United States was destined to extend its territory west to the Pacific Ocean and also had a considerable impact on American policy in the 1800s. Manifest destiny was the main influence for the huge expansion of the United States in the 1840s. All Americans supported the idea of Manifest Destiny, but it led to the American politics being even more separated between the north and the south. With more land the north could build more railroads which would help support trade from east to west. Also Expansion to the Pacific would increase trade overseas. The south tried to convince the north by saying that the expansion would help end slavery because it would move the population west. They also said that it would give the north a lot more land for farming and manufacturing which would help with the North’s unstable economy. The south wanted the land for cotton plantations and to eventually spread slavery throughout the United States and the north wanted the land for railroads, more land because of overpopulation, and to fix their economy.
