After the two year Mexican American war, they came together and signed a peace treaty with each side getting something. Mexico gave up one-third of their land for fifteen million dollars from the US. Now the one-third in the west, and that right there completed the manifest destiny. Now not everybody agreed with this, but 34 against 14 voted yes, out of the senate. This exchange opened up an opportunity for the Gadsden purchase soon after for the bottom part of NM and part of AZ. This was also an exchange, the land for three million dollars. This happened because of the very strict and precise Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo. Now this treaty had other exchanges than the money and land. For instance, all the Mexicans in the land had to go to Mexico land in a year or they would automatically become US citizens. Now the Mexican American war was a two year war, consisting of Mexico victories and US victories. "Declaration of US starts a war with Mexico 13 May 1846.” (OmniAtlas) This is just the date of the war being declared against Mexico, because they disagreed with Nicholas Trist a few months before. They had this battle for land and protection for two years. “From the time that Texas was annexed until the war ended in 1847, six different presidents attempted to make foreign policy, quite often at odds with each other.” This explain how many people tried and failed to get the land and peace. This also shows that the war started after Texas was annexed till the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed. When the treaty was signed both sides slightly got their way and there was peaceful trade. Before the treaty was signed, the last battle the one where General Santa Anna, president for a few months had to give up, he did this embarrassed. The office did not agree to anything until they read the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and then they ended the war and each side got their way.
