Marilyn Monroe was born as Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1st, 1926 in Los Angeles, California. Growing up as a child, life was difficult for her and her family. Not knowing who her father was, it was very crucial for her to have no father-figure growing up. Monroe’s mother, Gladys, also had psychiatric problems and eventually had to go to a mental institution. Monroe was then sent off to orphanages and passed off from foster home to foster home. But in 1937, a family friend and husband took her in for a few years. They go by the names of Grace and Doc Goddard. She went back to the foster homes at the age of seven. All of the foster homes had terrible environments for a young child like her. Year after year after year this continued. She wanted all of these bad things to stop. She wanted good things to start. She had already dropped out of high school at the age of only 15. So she thought long and hard of what she should do. She decided that she had to get married. She married her boyfriend, Jimmy Dougherty. Jimmy was a Merchant Marine, and was later sent to the South Pacific. Monroe then decided to go work at a munitions factory. And that is how she became noticed.
Career Take-Off Marilyn was spotted by a photographer and was a star from the first camera click. By the time her husband, Jimmy, got back, she was famous and changed her name from Norma Jeane Baker to Marilyn Monroe to help prep her for her (hopefully) upcoming acting career. Sadly, Marilyn and Dougherty’s marriage started to fall apart once Marilyn started focusing more on her career. The couple decided to get divorced in 1946 (which was right around the time when Marilyn signed her first film contract). Marilyn (now with a movie contract) had come up with a new image for herself. She was now calling herself “Marilyn Monroe”. To have an even newer look, she dyed her hair
