I am going to measure academic performance and achievement as my dependent variable. I am going to measure poverty as my independent variable. I will use a Cross-Sectional Survey that will use the nominal and ordinal scales to measure the dependent and independent variables. It will also include dichotomous questions.
Sampling:
My target population and the sampling frame are children ages twelve to eighteen, in grades sixth through twelfth grade, which are in disadvantaged environments, according to the United States Census. Consent forms will be given to the students to take home and get signed by a guardian. Once all consent forms are gathered the participating students will be given a written survey. The students will be given twenty-four hours to complete the survey and turn them into their teachers, which will later be gathered and given back to me. It can be taken home or completed at school. Giving the students more of an opportunity for privacy. It will be more convenient for student to be given a written survey because although I would like to have the questions available on a computer, be it in school or in there house, there is more likely of a chance for children who are raised in poverty not owning a computer. I will try and make sure that the survey questions are good questions by making sure they are not open ended or double barreled. All of the information collected in this survey is confidential and anonymous. No information will be shared with any other student and is specifically meant for this survey.
