MEDEA
I was recently invited to assist at an event, the performance of MEDEA that Arte Boricua presented at Steppenwolf theater’s 1700, directed by Julio Ramos. The play opens with the assassination of a woman who had committed infanticide, killing two of her own children. The following acts take place in the afterworld, where the woman confronts the decisions she made, and, eventually, her assassins. The play was in Spanish with English subtitles by Maria Pabon.
According to the script, Abraham had planned to sacrifice his son Isaac to please God who had tested his dedication. The story of Medea is based upon a Greek myth which was popularized by the tragedian Euripides. In it ,Medea …show more content…
Research shows that a person under stress is capable of committing acts that he/she would never do otherwise. In this specific case where the mother killed her children, audience members saw how important it is for personal and social issue to work together. Psychiatric conditions, such as depression and schizophrenia, might help in terms of understanding the circumstances for at least a portion of some acts of infanticide.
As a social worker I need to create a good alliance with clients, no matter what the client may have done. Social workers are not in the field of judgment; they are supposed to help and engage with individuals, families, and the community in order to help achieve a better life in society.
Every family lives its own reality, and sometimes families cannot find the resources or opportunities needed to solve their problems for themselves. Social worker can be the link between clients, families and communities, as well as other support systems. Nerveless, social worker has to be proactive and connect with a client through a good relationship, being a good listener and understanding the need of a client. Engagement with a client in a good therapy alliance can help a client feel free to talk and express his/her their
