In the summer of 2015, I interned at the Tuscaloosa Juvenile Court, worked part-time at the Benjamin Barnes YMCA. I had the opportunity to complete my professional media internship. However, I did not want to stress myself to the point where I went crazy. In the fall of 2015, I had another opportunity to complete my profession media internship. After fully understanding all of the career opportunities IMC could bring, I decided to complete my internship in the office of Institutional Advancement. I chose to work in Institutional Advancement because it’s the department responsible for raising fund for universities. Also, I desire to start a career in Higher Education Administration. The offices of Public Relations and Alumni Relations are under the umbrella of Institutional Advancement. Working in these office are just a few career options for a IMC major. However, there was no vacancies for me to intern with the office of Institutional Advancement. Furthermore, I had a backup plan. My backup plan was to intern at Tuscaloosa Center for Technology helping the students with their classes and preparing them for college. Ms. Winston was very happy to know of my intentions and she welcomed me with open arms. The United Way of West Alabama offered me a job and the opportunity to use my work hours as in. However, due to a lack of communication on their behalf, I had to decline the job and settle for interning.
The United Way of West Alabama’s mission statement is “United Way of West Alabama (UWWA) seeks to continually improve the quality of life for area residents by funding effective programs and services throughout the West Alabama community. United Way creates opportunities by focusing on the building blocks for a good life Education, Income/Financial Stability, & Health. United Way is helping children and youth achieve their potential through education, helping families become financially stable and independent, improving people’s health, and responding to emergency and disaster needs.”
While interning at the United Way of West Alabama, I was specifically assigned to the public relations department. My duties included: creating a letter to send to potential donors, researching and calling business owners for donations to United Way’s Day of Action, delivering itemsdonations to our United Way partner agency, distributing United Way information in high traffic areas across West Alabama and helping to promote United Way’s early childhood initiative. These tasks required a high degree of organizational skills, tenacity and
