These nocturnal mammals are the size of a fox, it has four short thick legs and a short curly tail. They have thick wet-proofed black-brownish short, fluffy fur that helps them blend into the shadows of the canopies on the ground and in the little undergrowth at night while they’re hunting. Their fur is able to puff up and out if they’re threatened to make themselves look bigger to scare any possible predators, or to warm their young during hatching and the winter months. Their favorites are Fireweed and cattail. They also have an extra thumb-like bone on their paws to help them grab plant stems to eat them, the leave and berries off of them. Even though they’re mammals they can lay one to three large eggs in one breeding season, and because they lay eggs they’ll make nest from different plant parts to help insulate the eggs to keep it at internal body temperature, they favorite plant parts to use are the seed fluff from both the fireweed and cattail plants, moss and lichen. Once the eggs are laid the men stay inside the cave warming the eggs while some of the women guard the cave entrance and other go lead the hunting with the younger men. The women mate with different men, who they have bonded with for life, every four years. The pup, once they hatch, have a black and white coat of fur and silver eyes, which are easy to see in the nest to keep them inside the cave, until they turn three years old which is when their black coats start to develop and they can adventure around the outside of the cave
