In the past, sculpture was a way of recording history, stones were material available for people to carve and express themselves in the form of art. This is evident from the two statues I will be discussing in this essay. The statue of Memi and Sabu which dated back to the ca. 2575–2465 B.C was found “From Egypt; Probably from Memphite Region, Giza, Western Cemetery”. (Metmesuem, 2017). This artwork represents a leader of profound respect from his people.
“This sculpture belongs to a series of diorite statues commissioned by Gudea, who devoted his energies to rebuilding the great temples of Lagash and installing statues of himself in them.” (Metmesuem, 2017). From the position of his hands it is seen that he is ready to talk to his people and lead them in religious activities too. Unlike the statue of Memi and Sabu, this statue was important right from the time it was made. It was a way of keeping record of things the leader has done and was made sacred for his
