Topic 1: Explain the difference between climate, weather, and meteorology.
The three terms climate, weather, and meteorology are all part of the same subject matter. However, they all have key differences from each other that make it especially important to be able to differentiate between each of them. Meteorology is the main category, while climate and weather are separate entities of it. Learning the differences between these terms makes it easier to understand the different parts of meteorology.
The term climate is the weather or atmosphere over a long interval of time. Typically, climate is the long-term weather over many years. When studying climate, meteorologists look at averages over several years and how the weather might be changing when looking to the future. Climate is also concerned with more than just weather. It deals with the oceans, physical landforms, and organisms in the different …show more content…
A major part of data assimilation is data initialization. This includes “smoothing out” errors in data that will be put into the numerical weather models, which will lead to better forecasts. Another big aspect of data assimilation is the interpolation of data. Interpolation involves placing irregular data onto a regular spaced grid by mathematically adjusting the data. In other words, interpolation creates evenly spaced data, even if the raw observations are very irregular. Interpolation creates better forecasts because the model will have better results with evenly spaced data than it would with more irregular and unevenly spaced data. Overall, data assimilation is very important because it modifies the data by making it easier for the models to read. By having easier data to read, the models are more likely to provide more accurate
