The first cause was the desire of the U.S to expand across the North American continent to the Pacific Ocean which caused conflict. President Polk came into office in 1845 with an idea called Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny was the belief that Americans were able to expand the border to the Ocean. The second cause of the war was the Texas War of Independence and the invasion of that area to the United States. Mexico needed settlers in the under populated north parts of the country and allowed U.S citizens to live in Texas they were known as “Texicans”. They were not happy with the way the government in Mexico handled their business. The Texas War began as both Mexican and Americans living in Texas fought for Independence from the Mexican Government.
