They are considered part of the middle class because unlike big business owners, they work alongside with their employees. If we look at Hope Street Pizza in Stamford, we can see that the owner is always working the register and helping his employees with many different tasks. On the other side of the spectrum, we can have the owner of Dominos, sitting in a corporate office somewhere in Manhattan making millions of dollars a year, and odds are he doesn’t even know how to make a pizza. This is why small business owners are considered middle class. Both due to labor conditions and salary.
At the bottom of the spectrum, we have the working class. The working class is large and diverse. The working class is made up of many different categories including management, business, sales, construction etc. Looking at sales, we can see that 15.4 million people worked in this field. However, about 7.3 million of these people should be considered middle class since they have authority over themselves and they have more power over their work lives.
