We need to learn about the different environments that the military is currently and will operate in, along with how our enemy and their tactics constantly change by using current operations to create plans for future missions. One factor that determines the success of the overall mission is the characteristics of the Staff NCO. They need to have qualities beyond just leadership and the core competencies. A Staff NCO that is intuitive will be able to anticipate their commander’s goals so that the mission can be accomplished to standard. This can only be done when they have an understanding of the overall process commanders use to make decisions. The process is not limited to just the Commander and the Staff NCO, every S shop in the organization plays a part by providing information for the overall mission. The Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) is a seven-step process for military decision-making in both tactical and garrison environments. S1 was responsible for personnel issues, assisting with flagging actions, and personnel services. S2 was responsible for providing intelligence briefs of the local area and assisting with updating all ISOPREP profiles. To plan and coordinate the PHA and other medical needs we coordinated with the Medical Operations NCO and Flight Surgeon. S3 was responsible for operations. The operations section oversaw staff duties, planning, and overall training. They considered requirements that are specific for the mission and developed training plans for both soldiers going on the mission and those staying behind in garrison. S4 coordinated all logistics related tasks. This staff section assisted with supply, quarters, rations, and shipping of equipment to make sure everything that was needed to accomplish mission would be available once on site. The S6 is the signal section and was in charge of communications. They assisted in issuing communication devices, help make them functional, and provided leaders with training on how to handle encrypted frequencies and load them while they are on a
