Mission Command is very important to a unit’s readiness. As the senior enlisted advisor, it will be imperative that I as the Command Sergeant Major (CSM) understand the commander’s intent, and visualize where he is going and help him achieve his desired state.
Mission Command Philosophy
As I reflect on what I have learned during the last six weeks, it has help understand the importance of the Mission Command Philosophy and the important role that the CSM will play. I will have to exercise my authority and assist in providing direction for a mission that the commander has given. I must understand all the activities associated with the Commanders Activities. I will understand the intent; I will need to understand the commander’s visualization, bridge the gap between the staff and higher headquarters. I must learn to collaborate with other partners, and assist in the validation process, provide feedback during the operational art and the operational approach development. As the CSM, I will ensure that we are utilizing all the tools within the Army Design Methodology and or Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) so that we can better facilitate to the staff during the planning process. I will help describe the process to the staff and subordinates so that they have a shared understanding what the Commanders activities entail and assist in this process. Most officers in the unit will have some type of knowledge of the Commanders activities; it will be my job to ensure that they stay on path during this process. In order for any unit to begin this process, they must receive a mission. This process takes a lot of critical thinking and some creative minds during these steps. Although the Commanders activities are important I must ensure that I maintain a physical presents during all phases of planning. It is vital that the CSM be involved in order to provide the commander with feedback when it is time to start
