Even though some people would say it is not fair, what really is not fair is the murderer getting to live after taking the innocent life of another. Montresor had already planned out the events for the night of Fortunato’s death. As shown in reading of Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” lines 1-6, Montresor is telling about how Fortunato had caused him much pain and how he would get revenge on him. Fortunato would pay for what he had done to Montresor, and Montresor was going to make sure of it. In these fews lines the story shows that Montresor had taken time to plan out what he was going to do. He knew that he was going to kill Fortunato no matter what was going to happen, simply because he had been mean to him. They are able to basically do whatever they want to, but if someone has just committed first degree murder then he or she should not be able to have all of these privileges. They should not even have the privilege to live anymore. If they are evil enough kill someone, then why should the government pay them to basically be happy and live out the rest of their lives in a place they know they will be taken care of? Macy then goes on to report that, “For justice to prevail, some killers just need to die." The killers do not need to be babied around in a prison cell. They need to be put to death because prison is too good for the crime that they have committed. Many points can be made on why the capital punishment should be used for Montresor’s case. He knew what he was going to do to Fortunato: he was going to get revenge on him. Fortunato’s loved ones will be more at ease knowing that Montresor is no longer able to live his life like nothing has ever happened, and will not be able to murder anyone else. Though
