Good morning church! It is on this beautiful morning that I would like to speak to you from a rather different passage. This message stems from the book of Nahum. If you are unfamiliar with this book, it consists of three chapters and is tucked in between Micah and Habakkuk in the Old Testament. The general overview of the book of Nahum is the description of God’s wrath toward Nineveh and how He will destroy it. (Dramatic Pause) Now before you check out on me, do not be dismayed. I promise you that I will not spend the next 30 minutes rebuking this church body. Instead, I want to talk to you about, “Jehovah-Naheh, the God Who Smites the Enemy.”

Many of you may know of the city of Nineveh based on the proceeding book of the Bible entitled Jonah. It is in those writings that Nineveh is described as an evil city that has come against God. Due to their evil, a prophet named Jonah was sent to preach to the people and bring them to God. He initially refused, hid from God, was swallowed by a whale, he eventually went to Nineveh, and reluctantly preached to the people. While the people repented of their ways and came to God, it was not long after, that they returned to their wicked ways. This was the first account of this cities wickedness catching God’s attention. As He is a merciful and good God, He was willing to grant them mercy.
b. Nimrod Genesis 10:8-11, 11:1-9
i. However, the account of Jonah in Nineveh is not the first record of this evil city. The city of Nineveh was actually founded by a man named Nimrod. If you remember back to the book of Genesis, Nimrod was the man who led the building of the tower of babel. This notoriously evil and wicked city was in reality founded by a man who was rebellious toward God. It is evident that the foundation of this city laid the groundwork for city of evil and destruction.

Instead, I want you to take with you today the fact that God is a merciful and loving God. The one who cleansed you of your sins and has filled you with His spirit. However, I beg of you not to forget that He is also a just God. He will not tolerate blatant evil and He defend His beloved against the enemy. In times of oppression and trouble, remember that He is your strong tower. In times of sickness and disease, He is your healer and deliverer.
