One such case is seen in diseases. Heart disease, despite being known as genetically oriented, cannot be solely attributed to only that cause. The rise in heart disease in the US has been staggering, and is frequently linked with the massive rise in obesity in the US. This shows such a strong relationship that there is no choice but to forego the thought that heart disease is only genetic- there are factors and lifestyle choices which help or hinder the disease to manifest. As of now, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.
Calling heart disease genetic by sole nature is shirking environmental responsibility, like it is with mental well-being. This is my main issue with psychological drugs, which treat the physical mechanisms, rather than the environmental factors or coping mechanisms that reinforce the illness. Personality traits have a heritable side to them as well, but with the invention of social media and “selfies” and all of that ridiculous stuff on the internet, young adults today are encouraged more than ever to indulge themselves in self-image obsession. Everything online is about tending to one’s online image, not to mention the comparative powers of the internet. If a young woman has greater access to all of the beautiful real and not-so-real women on the internet, it will affect her self-image, and make her dwell more on her own persona and appearance, which is in turn rewarded by ‘likes” or “comments” or even OKCupid matches. This huge environmental shift has caused a greater play in naturally narcissistic tendencies of some people.
