Men, women, and children are forced to work twelve to fourteen hours a day and six days a week. The factory conditions are extremely dirty and dangerous; with low ceilings, locked windows and doors, and poor lighting, the factories could even be described as claustrophobic. Often, limbs are lost due to machines that are hard to operate. The wages of the workers are not reasonable. Men make ten to fifteen shillings a week while women make a meager five shillings a week. Outrageously, children, who often have the most dangerous jobs, are only paid one shilling a week. Children are forced to work because their families don’t have nearly enough money to support themselves. They’re forced to work long hours and are frequently abused. Their small size makes them suitable for the most dangerous jobs. The living conditions in urban areas are contaminated with germs and are very unsanitary. Housing is usually dark, poorly constructed, and badly ventilated. There is no place to dispose of waste, so it is thrown into the street. The stench that fills the cities are terrible, adding to the odor of garbage scattered all over the streets. As a result, diseases like typhoid, measles, and cholera are festering everywhere. Most people live in poverty and suffer from their hazardous environment. They are subjected to minimum wage and poor working and living conditions. These factory workers and families came to urban areas to find new jobs with hopes of creating a better life for their families. Instead, most families do not even make enough money to have a meal everyday. In order to survive, workers are forced to work unreasonable hours six days a week. In addition, the factory workers were forced to deal with sweltering heat. The heat could distract them from paying attention to their machines which could result in limb loss. So although the opportunity to make money is present, it may cost you a limb or even your life. Child labor is also an increasing problem. Children are supposed to be having fun, not worrying about providing for their family. They work in coal mines which could lead to lung infections and other serious ailments in their future. The children are given dangerous jobs that often result in death. While women have started to work, they are forced to work in textile mills with many dangerous conditions, and they are not even fairly compensated for their hard work. While natural resources such as coal are utilized to manufacture and ship goods, they have a harmful effect on England’s environment. The streets are filled with garbage and sewage. People are constantly getting sick with diseases such as
