The novel’s tone was very symbolic; the hospital is presented as a metaphor for the cruel society of the late 1950s. The novel praises the expression of sexuality as the ultimate goal and condemns repression as based on fear and hate. The tone of One flew Over The Cuckoo’s nest is changed throughout the story, especially the end.
