Under Bismarck, Germany tried to prevent the Nightmare Coalition of France, England, and Russia by making Napoleon III look like the bad guy in the Austro-Prussian War. However, under William II this policy changed to a more vigorous manner of separating the Nightmare Coalition. Bismarck's decisions were significant to WWI because his foreign policy created alliances which was a long term cause of WWI. These alliances created tightness within the continent and led Europe into fighting. Germany, after defeating the French in the Franco-Prussian war, utterly humiliated them through the Treaty of Frankfort. In the end, the treaty caused the French to stand up to Germany in World War One. As a result of the war, Russia was forced to give up Port Arthur and the southern half of Sakhalin Island to Japan, to move out Manchuria, to recognize Korea as a Japanese protectorate and grant Japanese fishing rights north of Vladivostok. After losing the war, people in outrage, due to russian weakness, helped lead to the Russian Revolution, which was a wave of conflicts that lasted more than a year and still didn’t manage to overthrow the Tsar’s government. The February Revolution was the first major event and it was chaotic. The people had this unrest towards the Tsar for his cruel treatment toward them which includes, poor working conditions for city workers and peasants being treated poorly by patricians. Nicholas II was incompetent and didn’t realize that he was failing Russia
