An example of a paradox might apply when it comes to a doctor providing medicine for his/her patients with the intention of treating a certain ailment, however side effects from the medication might arise. As we know there are many people in the United States that take medication for certain medical conditions. However, in the process of the medication treating one ailment, the medication that was proscribed to the patient creates a whole new ailment separate from the one that was being treated by the doctor originally. As the lecture mentions, people who experience cognitive dissonance typically go through for stages “denial, anger, I don’t know, and change your mind” (Kane, Cognitive Dissonance Lecture Video). A person who finds out that they were adopted might at first go through the denial stage in which they would refuse accept the new information because it would seem incomprehensible to the reality that they lived. A second stage that might occur is the anger stage in which the individual who was adopted will probably experience a degree of anger towards the adoptive parents for not telling them truth when they were younger and anger towards the biological parents for not keeping them. The I don’t know phase might occur when the adoptee may feel as though because they don’t have the biological connection to their adoptive parents and they don’t know who or where their biological parents are, they don’t know where they belong in the world. Finally, the last stage in which the adoptee changes their mind in terms of their outlook of the family situation. They will begin accept the new reality of their family dynamic and they will realize that they were far more fortunate to grew with people who cared for them than many people who grew up in the unstable world of foster care, group homes, …show more content…
Over the last several years, mass shootings have become more common place in the American consciousness. As a result, discussion about enacting stricter gun laws have ramped up. However, enacting stricter laws might have a counterintuitive effect in which the use of other types of deadly weapons might go up such as stabbings, baseball bats, and etc because of the lack of access to guns. Also, people who really want guns can just simply go to the black market the get guns and of course who would mainly participate in these types of the illegal activities would be criminals.
