Value Patterns in relation to Parenting Styles, Social Environment and Media Exposure of Senior Secondary School Students of Punjab
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Human society has undergone several upheavals. The ever-changing nature of human being has compelled it to change itself. Basically the driving force behind it is the inner tendency or core instincts of human beings. In other words this dynamic force could be called value. Values are considered those principles which help improve the quality of life. Parents play important role to enhance the value in students. Social Environment gives safe learning environment to students, where student feels confident enough to take risks and make mistakes. Students can start learning how to cooperate by watching TV programs and using computer games and apps that show helping behaviour. With the help of the media students can develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills by playing computer games designed to develop these skills, or they can develop ethical thinking by comparing family values with values in fiction or documentaries. It has more educational benefits for students for example, TV shows and movies based on books can encourage children to read, joining online clubs can help children practise using social media safely, or playing computer games with friends and family can help them practise cooperation and improve social connections. When students observe role models in the media they taught values. Hilda (2011) “Values are those principles or standards which help to better the Quality of life. Values codify the ‘dos and don’ts’ of behaviour. Values form the basics of Character formation and personality development. The values that spring from within or the core of the heart like love, compassion, sympathy, empathy, tolerance etc, lay foundation for the external practiced values like honesty, discipline, punctuality and loyalty.
Schwartz (2012) points out five common characteristics in value definitions – values are beliefs; they concern behaviour or desirable ends, transcend specific situations, guide the choice or assessment of the situation, and follow an order of importance.
Natasha (2013) Values are considered to be organizing factors with in personality and especially important to moral character. Life with values is always meaningful .Moreover it means literally something previous, something dear, something for which one is ready to suffer, to sacrifice for and it is indeed valuable to die
