Starting with the first day we moved into our dorm we are greeted by new faces and take part in activities that would reserve a permanent place in our memories. Students arrived at Michigan State from different cities, different states, and even different countries, and we were placed in dorm rooms and worked to find our way to class. These students have different backgrounds and goals, and each had an idea for a career, but we all share the need to be able to communicate at a college level and writing is an excellent place to start. Michigan State requires completion of a college level writing course for all degrees and most students take WRA101, first year writing. The syllabus for this course states, “The goal of this course is to engage …show more content…
The fourth project challenged me to convert the cultural artifact research into a new genre. Several genres were reviewed and I made the decision to use a children’s book as the genre for my fourth paper. The genre was interesting because I looked at books that made me think of my parents reading to me when I was young, and this enabled me to reflect on the start of my lifelong literacy. I tried to better understand this genre by looking at books that I have at home, and doing some research at the library. I was able to use the basic story that the Ojibway Indians tell when they talk about the origins of the dreamcatcher as the story I wanted to tell to children. My take away from the genre change project was learning that there are many ways that you can present a topic and each has challenges and provides an opportunity for learning. I was surprised at how difficult it was to write a story at the reading level of an eight year old. I explored a variety of genres including the research paper, posters, power point and children’s books. I expect to be able to apply my understanding of each as I continue my education. When I have an assignment to present research or information to a group, I will reflect on the work that I saw and then apply the genre that would provide the most

I second all of the points brought up by Chris in his responce to your incredible writing. I was deeply moved by your literacy narrative. By simply having the pleasure of spending the past month or so with you, I would have never known about the part of your life that you wrote so passionately about in your literacy narrative. I often find it so intriguing that everyone has a story that resonates so deeply with him or her. That is exactly why I think large projects such as Humans of New York (HONY) or class assignments such as this one are so important.…

Does rejection or determination push you to go beyond the limits of what one expects of you? Most everyone would say it does, but does this only affect those of us who want to be writers? It definitely does not, nor is it limited to anyone of a particular language. People of different backgrounds, all have the same urge to learn something not entirely expected of them, even if it is just a different language. The writings of people, while very similar, have a great number of differences.…

As stated in the assignment description, literacy is entirely acquired in context. As I’ve known how to read since my early developmental years, it wasn’t that I was able to read something into much later on. Reading a novel is different from reading an article on a newspaper or online as reading a screenplay is different from reading a poem. When I first started college two years ago, I acquired an entirely new literacy of a digital artifact in a digital media class. In the class, a core project was the development of a professional personal website.…

I am unfamiliar with books, should I say “ A picky reader “. I’ve moved to the United States five years now, and I have to say I barely read. In school, it was extremely difficult for me to choose the right book to actually get into it, or sometimes, I am just lazy to read. I’d rather just sit in front of my computer for hours and play games on it, since it is my everyday routine. But, don’t get me wrong, once I find the right book, I could finish the large book in one week, or even three days.…
