Personal Narrative: My Path To Literacy

My path to literacy began when I was old enough for my mother, father, and older sisters to read to me. I began listening to books before I could speak, and I believe my exposure to books influenced my speech development because it expanded my vocabulary. Throughout elementary school, not only did I read often, but I also played various computer games that helped form my technological literacy; socialized with my family’s friends, which supported my social literacy; and spent much of my time at church, where I developed my spiritual literacy. As I entered middle school, I began as a homeschooled student. However, I transitioned to a private school in eighth grade and then to a public high school in ninth grade. As I entered high school, I do not believe much changed for me, other than learning how to drive and receiving a cell phone and laptop; these new technological devices expanded my technological literacy further. Moreover, once I entered college and began working and learning how to budget the money I was earning, my financial literacy began developing and has been ever since. Even with all of the changes I underwent throughout elementary, middle, and high school that paved my pathway to literacy, or “literacies”, I am still changing and growing. Consequently, I would say that my path to literacy continues to be under development. Now that I am a married woman attending a university and taking on responsibilities I did not have prior to marriage, my different literacies are still growing, such as my financial literacy. As I grow older, become a teacher, potentially have children, and do whatever else that may be a part of my future, my literacies will change and grow, and my path will not look the same as it does at this
