As an aspirating teacher, I must never forget what it is like to be a student and have no choice in the classroom. When students are given a voice they will work harder and become more in tune with the classroom. I will work hard to give my students choices in their curriculum. The most important thing to me is that my students understand the topics and are completing assignments. Students will produce higher quality of writing when they are writing about topics of personal concern or for alternate audiences. I know from personal experiences this rings true for me. When I have passion or concern for a topic I want to write about it, and the quality of my writing is better. As the teacher, I must give my students not merely topics to write about, but topics with a purpose (YouTube). Research shows that as people we must be challenged first to be motivated (YouTube). Students will seek for mastery of their topic and will want to make their own contributions (YouTube). When teachers give students assignments that invite flexibility, students will be motivated to learn. When students are reading and writing with engaging texts they are perfecting their skills to become masters of English. According to Lawrence Baines and Anthony Kunkel, “Student mastery of written and oral language, is the ability to comprehend texts and make logical inferences, media literacy as well as students’ goals …show more content…
I also thought that bribery could motivate students. Upon completing this course I can see where I was ignorant. From research we know that these statements are not true, and in fact the opposite. Instead of telling my students they speak wrong, I will celebrate their culture with them, but help them learn how to write and speak with academic English. My students will learn to recognize and correct grammar errors in their own writing through the minimal marking system. Giving my students freedom and purposes to write will further motivate them, and they will produce higher quality writing. Most importantly, I shall strive to show students of their own individual brilliance. When students realize that their teachers believe in them and respect them that is when students will feel comfortable, and think creatively. Teachers who show students that their ideas and thoughts are intelligent, only then will the teacher have instilled confidence in their students. Delpit and Dowdy say it best when they say, “Those of us who teach must first make our students recognize their potential brilliance” (Delpit & Dowdy 2008, p.45). I want to show all of students that they all have the capacity to learn and that they are all
