A miracle is an improbable or extraordinary event, development, or accomplishment that brings very welcome consequences, according to Dictionary.com. From this, many can infer that it is impossible to purchase a miracle seeing that they are so unlikely. A few dollars should not be able to expedite the process of receiving miracles. So why are people so willing to donate money to a cause promising items that cannot be bought? There are many factors that can influence a person’s willingness to donate to such a cause. These are often known and exploited by people to fill their own avarice.
There are many people currently dealing with various issues, who see no sign of help. They are often desperate and are looking for a way to ease their pain. Christians tend to look towards God for help and protection, although sometimes they feel as though he is not hearing their prayers. People like Rev. Peter Popoff use the weakness and sufferings of others to benefit themselves. Although there is another “profession” that benefits from the same quality, a scam artist. Popoff is a perfect example of a modern day scam artist. He uses a large platform so that he can reach a larger, more diverse audience. He tricks his audience into believing that he has magic products that will make their lives better, although these items come at a cost. Also as time goes on the cost of the items significantly increases. This money goes straight to Popoff and greatly benefits him as seen in the following example, “His California home just sold for almost $2 million, and in recent months, he’s been spotted driving a Porsche and a Mercedes” (Avila et al. 2).
