During the days leading up to Election Day, and on Election Day we used a multifaceted approach to ensuring that as many people voted as possible. The first stage of this approach was termed as “visibility”, which meant that we went around holding signs and posters demonstrating our support for Democratic candidates. This was important because it showed people that there was vocal, enthusiastic support for those candidates. It also gave us the means of speaking directly to voters, who often approached us with questions about the candidates we supported. The other aspect of our GOTV effort was going door to door to talk to possible voters. We made sure they knew where to go vote, urged them to vote if they were hesitant to do so, and answered any questions they may have had about any of the candidates. Many of the questions that arose were regarding how our government functions, and about specific issues that people are passionate about. Students who are interested in this internship should take at least an intro to American Government class. Having taken AP Gov in high school, and Poli Sci 002 before this internship gave me knowledge that proved invaluable in our work.
