Liberals believe in a heavily regulated government. They’re big proponents of social rights and socioeconomic equality. Liberals believe that government can solve many societal issues such as equality and environmental issues. Unlike conservatives, liberals don’t believe that private businesses won’t regulate themselves to protect the environment. Liberals are in favor of social welfare programs and prioritizing domestic issues, like the homeless or affirmative action. A liberal ideology is statistically common among minorities such as Hispanics and Black Americans. Liberalism and democratic ideals are common among minorities because they have been able to benefit from welfare programs throughout history. So they often choose to support these programs for their own and others benefit. There is no dominant religion among liberals. Some are part of the Christian faith and others are nondenominational. Religion is not that significant influence on liberal beliefs. Most of the ethical and moral principles liberals live by are not dictated by their religion, instead by agreements set up by society. Unlike Calvinistic beliefs, today humans are not inherently evil. Liberals believe that civil obedience and equality will dictate the moral and ethical beliefs of Americans. Both ideologies share self-interest based on one’s economic and social position. Someone in a higher income bracket would be more conservative, while someone under the poverty line will greatly benefit from a liberal ideology. (Lam Thuy Vo) The stereotypes of both conservative and liberal ideologies don’t ultimately define these political ideologies. They just provide examples of what the ideology’s beliefs and opinions. The examples also can be interpreted in a way that allows for people to understand why these political ideologies are chosen. Although these stereotypes can be dangerous and misleading.
