After the civil war had ended in 1865, Polygamy was practiced for 25 years, until congress tried to destroy the church and the practice (Howick). Congress did not finish their job due to the polygamist communities that still exists to this day.
In America, all citizens have the freedom of choice and religion. Polygamist communities and parents lie to their children to keep them in the community. There are about 1,800 people living in Hildale, Utah (Lankford, Jr. 24). Most of those people belong to the Church of Latter Day Saints. The Hildale Church Prophet is Warren Jeffs. Warren dictates who the young girls in the community will marry and the age they will marry. Warren has to approve everything his people in his community does so polygamy becomes more of a dictatorship (Lankford, Jr. 25). America is a democracy so polygamist communities should be destroyed. The polygamists communities do not follow American laws. It is not legally okay for some of the country to have the right of freedom of choice, and religion while others have to fight for it.
