Pope Francis is reminding the world that a Christian’s duty is to welcome foreigners with open arms. Pope Francis has put migrants on the top of his agenda according to The Washington Post. He has emphasized the need to support migrants in his recent sermons, speeches, and deeds. The Washington Post quotes, “The Vatican is standing in opposition to politicians like President Trump on immigration.” Pope Francis is appointing bishops and cardinals to be leaders in their areas for the cause.…

Before starting this project I came across an article from Huffington Post called Beyond the Conservative/Liberal Catholic Divide, written by Matthew N. Schmalz. My first time reading this article I thought that Schmalz was just writing about the different stereotypes in the catholic religion and that it is possible to be a liberal catholic, which originally sparked my interest. As a liberal I never knew that we could even participate in the Catholic Church, due to my views on Gay Marriage and abortion. Little did I know that there was so much more than just another thing that liberals and conservatives con not come to similar terms on from a local Catholic Church. As a community Saint Thomas Aquinas University Parish practices forgiveness and acceptance for some more than others.…
If they were able to escape, they were captured and whipped upon orders of Serra himself. All of this information is documented to some extent. Even if there aren’t direct accounts of Junipero torturing innocent people, there are documents of the friars working below him. “Two or three whippings which Your Lordship may order applied to them on different days may serve, for them and for the rest, for a warning may be of spiritual benefit to all,” Serra ordered. (Lopez) Were documents like those written off as someone else’s fault?…
“Meeting with the Pope does not kind of validate everything” it just explains everything. (Logos) Pope Francis also met with other people like Mark Wahlberg, Norma and Mary and so forth. And they said it was a great honor meeting with the Pope. (Ethos) The article of Kim Davis: Seven Points to Keep in Mind where it says about Vatican, Pope Francis did not express any view.…
1.) Idealistic and spiritual motives were in fact at work. Doing penance for one's sins was a powerful spiritual factor. An especially powerful motive was the religious aura of Jerusalem, which had been a popular pilgrimage site for Christians. The popes of the Gregorian Reform delegated shedding blood to the laity.…
This enlightens the idea that the Pope isn’t a holy entity, but a person. During this era, people were starting to rethink the notions of the church.…
The Church has for a while been overstepping its powers in the political realm; the priests and bishops were selling God’s forgiveness and preaching doctrine in direct opposition to the reality of Christ’s message; the pope was thoroughly…
During the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco (where he reigned for 36 years), the position of the Catholic Church was highly included and changed dramatically after the civil war. The Franco regime used religion as a way to gain popularity and trust throughout Spain, exploiting the faith of others. Catholicism was the only state religion allowed at the time, so the Franco regime preferred a conservative Roman Catholicism. Franco saw the Catholic Church as the perfect opportunity to show his power discretely. He could hide all that he did behind the church because he knew that the people would trust him.…
Politics and the Wars of Religion By: Phillip Ableidinger, Jin Johnson, and Matthew Kellen “Discuss the relationship between politics and religion by examining the wars of religion. Choose three specific examples from the following: the Dutch Revolt, the French wars of religion, the English Civil war, and the Thirty Years’ war.” Politics and religion have for long been two sides of the same coin. Although it’s easy to dismiss their relationship as desultory or ineffectual, it has jointly wielded considerable power on the geopolitical stage; perhaps even single handedly changing the course of modern European history. The partnership between church and state cannot be understated, having been the main cause of power-struggles, societal collapse and power shifts throughout the 16th and 17th centuries.…
Papal Infallibility Those outside the Church generally misunderstand the Catholic teaching on papal infallibility. In particular, fundamentalist Christians often confuse the charisma of papal infallibility as something that affects the pope’s status. They imagine Catholics believing the pope to be sinless or unable to sin. Secularists and irreligious people believe papal infallibility to be a fairly new concept. They also speculate it was invented as a means to defend the church against the emerging threats of scientific innovation.…
Papal power was threatened by the growth of nation-states, which tested the churches temporal power and authority” (261). Combined with some of the local clergy, rulers opposed papal intervention in state matters and favored the formation of general church councils to reduce papal power. In addition, the reformers criticized the papacy, who had seen earlier reform movements and the crusaders alter their original high-minded purposes to suit the ambitions of the popes. The bourgeoisie also affected the reform of the papacy whose realistic outlook was adopting growing skepticism, national patriotism, and…
Firstly, there are many examples of how the Church's Institutionalism offers opportunity to suppress or even be corrupted. For Example, the Churches was created so that "the fullness of power" stayed in control by "a ruling class" by basically taking it, (Dulles). As a Christian, I don't oppose the Catholic Church, but I do see a conflict of interest, in the richest most influential Christian representatives on earth who wear jewelry, and Gold head adornments worth millions, while we still have millions dying daily of a vast numbers of reason. Another contradiction arises with "The principal paradigm" which the Vatican II basically claim to be the new "People of God of the New Covenant," replacing previous chosen people and the Covenant offered…
The Great Western Schism greatly damaged the influence, power, and standing of both the pope and the Roman Catholic Church during the Late Middle Ages, causing numerous negative effects on European society. As said by the website The Great Schism, “The schism did untold harm to papal prestige and intensified the growth of hostility to the papacy in many parts of Europe.” Throughout European history, the position of pope was one associated with great power and respect, and whatever the pope said was thought to be the absolute truth. However, due to the emergence of multiple popes, many people began questioning the importance and integrity of the pope, as well as their religion and faith as a whole. Some people began questioning whether the pope…
Gregory VII was one of the most profound popes of the medieval church, whose name entitles the 11th century movement known as the Gregorian Reform. During this time, he was the reform, changing the very foundation of the papacy, fighting for a more aggressive and proactive papacy. “Gregory VII identified three issues as key to the Church’s corruption: the sale of sacred office, the marriage of priests and, above all, the interference of powerful laymen in clerical appointments.” As pope, Gregory VII positioned took the positioned based on the fact that if the church remains unable to choose its own leaders, free from interference, then it will always remain entangled in the politics and money, never fully capable to encourage priests to preach and spread the Gospel to a forever sinful…
