As a nurse teaching is a part of everyday life. Learning to teach properly is essential. Clients, residents and patients alike all learn and receive information a little differently. Having skills and ways of covering these different ways of learning can decrease risks for more serious problems later. The overall outcome for the presentation and paper are the middle and late adults having the ability to correctly understand, use and benefit from the information on a prescription label. This knowledge is a health need for this population and may decrease risks for other complications. The population are mainly middle and late adults. Erickson’s stages of development says that middle adulthood ages are 40-64 years old and are normally on the stage of Generativity vs. Stagnation. Late adulthood focus on adult 65 years and older and are in the stage ego vs, Despair. (Jarvis, 2012). Teaching strategies for these two groups compared to the outcomes of Erickson’s development, the overall virtues point to wisdom, care, acceptance, usefulness, involvement and wellbeing. Adapting these outcome and qualities for this audience taking a holistic approach is best.
Tying this into the display, detail and length of the presentation knowing these adults have some kind of prior knowledge and wisdom so showing information and pictures they may have scene makes the information more relatable, thus more likely to retain and use the information. Evidence that supports this strategy is the idea that adults learn better from having relatable examples they can use their prior knowledge to draw conclusions or build knowledge upon (Brown, 2014). Appealing to the visual learners by having the pictograms of how to take medications and of the examples of materials are used. Also many elderly adult have some difficulty with vision, which can result of the natural aging process. The handouts and visual examples are easier to recognize than the words and the teacher doesn’t have to be too worried about the font size and style of words. Cognitive learning domains are the main focus of learning using the resident’s mental skills to increase their knowledge of the topic.
Posters, hand-outs, index cards (with answers for the resident to lift up instead of answering aloud) are used in the presentation. Because of the uncertainty of resources some locations other forms of technology may not be the best way to present this
