Bank runs, failures, and panics were also happening during this time. Bank runs are when everyone runs to the bank to withdraw money. Bank failures are when the banks ran out of money so they bank using their customers reserved emergency funds. Bank panics are when banks suffer bank runs at the same time because people have lost trust and believes their bank may suffer a bank failure.Lastly, racism was still around during this time period. With racism still being in existence during this time there were racial riots and racial segregation. According to document D, even though the National Industrial Recovery Act was passed, it was still ruled unconstitutional in the Schechter v.s. United States case in 1935. This shows how the government’s decision is more powerful and that they promote capitalism. In addition, document F shows a Social Security Administration (SSA) advertisement. The SSA is one of the “New Deal” programs. This program is to provide money to the following people: old age, survivors, disability, and intervention (OASDI). This shows the government becoming more powerful because it shows how the government made a program that automatically taxes income to support those who need it.
In conclusion, FDR’s “New Deal” did have an effect on society both then and now. Even though all of the solutions/programs may not have been effective they still helped to make a difference in society during the Great Depression.
