Professional Orientation And Ethics Paper

Professional orientation and Ethics course has taught me a lot about the principles of a counselor’s conduct and behavior. I learned the importance of separating my personal beliefs and behaviors from my therapeutic approach as a counselor. The text defines ethics as “acceptable or good practice according to agreed-upon rules or standards of practice established by a profession” (Remley & Herlihy, 2014, p.4). Professional orientation and ethics has expanded my knowledge in the importance of counselor compliance, the importance of boundaries between and counselor and a client, and the different types of ethical decision making models. I have learned that becoming a multiculturally competent counselor is what I strive to become even though it will take consistent effort to pay close attention to my own bias, assumptions, and values. I feel that most of the forms of bias such as racism, sexism, classism, homo-prejudice, ableism, and ageism I am comfortable enough to be open minded and willing to try to understand and listen to my client without having too much of a bias option. The one topic of religious bias is what I am really going to have to work hard consistently, especially with atheism. I can understand different religion types and different religious beliefs but to not believe in anything at all is hard for me. But now that I know how to overcome bias and work on a positive client/counselor relationship I feel more aware and will remind myself of my awareness to this bias if I would ever come across it in a counseling session. Fun activities for me are going to the gym, playing basketball, and spending time with my daughters helping them prepare for games. In regards, to school and having to deal with work I remain focus on the end. A buddy once told me a statement by Winston Churchill “if you’re going through hell keep going” I’m not saying this program is like going through hell but with a full-time job and three kids in sports who need to get back and forth from practice and transportation to games. My life seems to never slow down so I have keep going because at the end everything will work out. My self-care is engaging in activities to help me get my mind of things when I have the chance and knowing the benefits of completing this
