Censorship was created to protect people from things we don’t want them to see. It was probably created with the best intentions. Clearly, it didn’t work out that way. Many people think censorship protects humans from things they are not prepared or ready to see. The details of that will be explained later. Other people think censorship blocks out the truths of what is happening in our world. Those people think that censorship doesn’t ready humans, and especially children, for the real world. Censorship is found in government, schools, and in homes. In the following paragraphs I will be breaking down the pros and cons of censorship in each of those three areas, while taking a clear stance on the area. A lot of the time, the reason comes from “Most pressures for censorship come from parents who disapprove of language or ideas that differ from or affront their personal views and values.” There are many negatives that come from the censorship of books in schools. If books are constantly cut out because they have language or violence or sexuality, then children will not learn what real life is like. “Many frequently challenged books help people get a better idea of the world and their place in it.” Vulgar language is heard in the workplace and all over the world, so if children don’t learn how to hear it without freaking out, then they won’t be able to function in the real world. Same goes for violence and sexuality. If children are introduced to the world thinking those things don’t exist, then the schools and parents set them up for failure. These topics actually “may have educational value, and the decision about what to use in the classroom should be based on professional judgments and standards, not individual preferences."
