At first when reading the article I had a sense of what bulimia nervosa was but wanted to learn more about what psychiatric disorders were. According to Kristalyn Salters, a psychiatric disorder is a mental illness diagnosed by a mental health professional that greatly disturbs your thinking, moods, and/or behavior (2017). I know there are many people who suffer from mental disorders and I was interested to see how they would compare to the other two groups as well. I was surprised the ones who had bulimia had a little more stress and life events happened to them than those who had a psychiatric disorder. It was not by a lot but I still believed those with mental illness were going to be the ones who were the most stressed. I assumed because they had a mental illness they would report more than those with bulimia nervosa but they did not. The healthy control group results surprised me as well. I was not expecting the largest number for the healthy group to be with change in family structure with 23.3% (S.Gonçalves, C.Machado, P.Machado, 2014). The life event dealing with family structure was not something I thought many would have a problem with. Although 23.3% does not seem like a lot, it was the highest number to appear within the life events for the healthy group. I was confused as to why researchers chose to only pick women to be apart of this study since it was not
