Client Introduction
Alex is a 21-year-old male attending Buffalo State College. He feels as if the only characteristic that makes him diverse is his sexual orientation, which is gay. Alex is from Kenmore, New York and is currently living with his parents. Not only is Alex a full time student in the social work program, he is also working full time at Panera Bread. Within the field of social work, he is still undecided about what he wants to do, but knows that he wants to get his MSW.

I thought that during the interview I would have keep thinking about the skills I need to use instead focusing in on what was most important, which was Alex and what he said to say. During the interview, skills such as open- and closed-end questions, furthering responses using prompts and reflecting content seemed to be second nature. Instead of making sure that I was using a certain skill, I just went with the flow of the conversation. The challenging part of the interview was that I was afraid I wasn’t using a good variety of skills. I noticed that I was often giving Alex multiple verbal and nonverbal prompts as well as reflecting content. I think that I should be more mindful and practice the many types of engagement skills in order to help the clients with their mixed feelings and be able to empathetically communicate with
