With the workshops the Negroes held they started to repeatedly ask themselves questions such as “Are you able to accept the blows without retaliating?, Are you able to endure the ordeals of jail?”, in order to express the purpose of direct action. They all had to make sure everyone who wanted to stand up for justice was ready to face the battles that may come their way. Even though they were trying to perform a nonviolent campaign, there were still “creative tension” amongst themselves.
