Nationalism Essay Nationalism came to the United States after the war of 1812 was fought. Even though the United States citizens didn’t fight as a whole, after the war was fought the people were more connected. With nationalism on the rise, many new changes were brought up that bettered the nation. America was starting to produce more things for themselves. Nationalism was also brought up to the United States during James Monroe’s presidency. Nationalism ended up bringing many political, economic, and cultural developments.
Three main political developments that occurred when nationalism was on a rise was the Louisiana Purchase, the Embargo Act, and the Monroe Doctrine.

Even though it was a major failure towards the American government, it showed that we didn’t have to rely on other manufacturers in different countries to make things for us. Also, it brought the U.S. closer together because more industries were brought up. It showed that the Americans are determined and strong.
The Monroe Doctrine contributed to a greater sense of independence and statehood by showing that the Americans need to stick together. This doctrine showed a sense of independence because if a foreign country tried to come in and take land, the American army would attack. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow had many works that contributed to nationalism, but the main one was the poem called Paul Revere’s Ride. Paul Revere’s Ride is about how Paul is trying to warn all of the citizens of the town that a war is coming. This poem contributed to nationalism because it showed the determination of the American people. It also shows nationalism because a war is about to occur and that every person needs to help fight to win and that the people need to take pride in their country. Another main poet that contributed to nationalism was John Greenleaf Whittier. He wrote Ein Feste Burg Ist Unser Gott. This piece of work served as a purpose to bring everyone in America together by completely getting rid of slavery in America. This work contributes to nationalism because the author thought if everyone in America was treated equal it would make a huge advancement towards nationalism.
