The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2016) endorses that all entry-level registered nurses should be trained at a baccalaureate program. It is important for registered nurses to earn a master’s degree within 10 years of receiving first nursing license. This will promote quality of care and enhance patient safety.
The scope of practice laws in each state are the rules that govern the actions licensed health-care professionals can execute. Removing the scope-of-practice barriers, according to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academics (2010), would allow qualified professional nurses to practice to their capacity of the training and education they have received. Recommendations are made for changes to the health care system and nursing education. In order for this to work many actions need to happen.
